The company, based in Vienna, Austria, was founded in 1982 and is an investment company of the international healthcare group Fresenius.
The company is currently undergoing a transformation process involving four transactions. The rehabilitation business was sold to PAI Partners in October 2024, while the hospital services business was integrated into Fresenius Health Services in January 2025. In addition, the international project business was sold to Worldwide Hospitals Group (WWH) in April 2025, while the Austrian project business and the thermal spa operations of VAMED Vitality World are to be sold to Porr, subject to regulatory approval. In-depth talks are also ongoing with Strabag regarding remaining parts of VAMED's Austrian activities – primarily the operations business of the Vienna General Hospital (AKH Wien).
On September 16, 2025, VAMED AG—primarily the holding company—was renamed VIACAMA AG.
