The Oncology Rehabilitation Hospital is the first of its kind in the federal state of Salzburg, closing an important gap in the care of oncology patients. The facility was built directly adjacent to the existing Regional Hospital St. Veit im Pongau. For the planning and construction of the Oncology Rehabilitation Hospital, VAMED was awarded the ÖGNI pre-certificate for sustainability in silver – confirming that the new facility meets all sustainability criteria across ecological, economic, sociocultural, functional, and technical dimensions, as well as process and site quality.

The “Leuwaldhof” is Austria’s first family-oriented rehabilitation center for children and adolescents with cancer and metabolic diseases. Built in record time of only ten months, it is the first facility in Austria to enable rehabilitation in oncology for the entire family. The center combines top medical and therapeutic expertise with child- and family-friendly architecture, making it one of the most modern pediatric rehabilitation clinics in Europe.

Challenge

The construction site is located on a south-facing slope with a 12–16 degree incline above the Salzach Valley, nestled between existing building complexes, and required careful architectural integration. The construction of the new buildings had to be carried out without significantly disrupting the operations of the existing hospital or affecting its patients.

Solution

Both projects were realized based on a competence partnership of VAMED and Salzburger Landeskliniken (SALK). The facilities are located in the immediate vicinity of the existing St. Veit Regional Hospital. VAMED was awarded with a turnkey contract commissioned by the project and financing company WECO Reha Leasing GmbH.
